"Road Runners" is a series of images which capture the hidden world of nocturnal wildlife on tarmac roads in Arizonan suburbia. These evocative photographs reveal the vibrant and often unseen lives of creatures struggling to thrive amidst human infrastructure, illustrating the dynamic interplay between nature and urban environments.

I documented the brutal lifestyle of these animals have had to adapt to, understanding their lifestyles from a local’s perspective. Spending my childhood in Arizona I decided to visit my hometown Tucson, Arizona to create a series focusing on the wildlife I would see on late night walks.

Walking along cool suburban roads with nothing but my camera, a flash and some flip-flops I explored the same roads I grew up on. All the creatures I photographed are nocturnal hunters. They feed on insects like grasshoppers, beetles, other small spiders and arthropods, and will sometimes eat small lizards. Shooting this diverse ecosystem was a harrowing process, as I watched cars run over hundreds of Red Spotted Toads (Bufo punctatus) and Arizonan Blond Tarantulas (Aphonopelma chalcodes). I hope this series transforms our understanding of suburban landscapes, emphasising the adaptability and resilience of creatures often disregarded by the public.
